Preparing for your doctor visit
To get the most out of your doctor visits, prepare in advance. Print out your list of questions from the "Questions for Your Doctor" tool and bring it with you on your visit. And follow the tips below for more accurate blood pressure readings:
- Don't consume anything with caffeine 30 minutes before your blood pressure reading is taken. This includes coffee, tea, and some headache medications.
- Don't smoke 30 minutes before your blood pressure reading. (Or even better, quit! Smoking contributes to high blood pressure.)
- Don't take cold medications with decongestants—they can increase your blood pressure.
- A full bladder may slightly increase your blood pressure reading. Go to the bathroom before your reading.
- Rest for three to five minutes before the reading. Don't even talk.
- Follow any additional pre-visit instructions provided by your physician.
