More than 90% of the time, the exact cause of hypertension is not known,
but there are risk factors for the disease that you can control.
Lose weight if you are above your ideal weight. When your weight goes
up, your blood pressure goes up. Even a weight loss of just 10 pounds
can help lower your blood pressure.
Get more exercise. Physical activity is as important as maintaining a
healthy weight and diet. Start by planning at least 30 minutes of moderate
activity each day. Always talk to your doctor before starting any exercise
program.
If you smoke, quit. Not only will it help lower your blood pressure,
it can also reduce your risk of other diseases related to smoking, such
as lung cancer and heart disease.
Limit drinking. Too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure, as well
as damage your liver, brain, and heart.
Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, such as bananas, or other foods
high in potassium. Potassium helps balance the amount of salt in your
body. Too much salt leads to increased fluids in your body and increases
blood pressure. Limit salt and fat in your diet and eat more foods with
fiber (whole grains). Ask your doctor to refer you to a dietitian for
help with your diet.
