When your heart beats, it pumps blood through your arteries to the rest of
your body. The force of blood on the walls of the arteries is referred to as
blood pressure. High blood pressure, also called hypertension (hy-per-ten-shun), occurs when the
amount of pressure needed to get the required amount of blood flow through your
body is higher than normal. This also causes the heart to work harder than it should.
